About the Auditions

Preliminary Auditions will consist of performing a short contemporary monologue, as well as a short vocal audition (see Vocal Audition Requirements below.). If you don’t have a prepared monologue, please read from one of the “optional monologues” listed at the very bottom of the General Audition Information page.

Callbacks will consist of a vocal call back that includes sight-reading, group singing, improvisation, and/or coaching. Additionally they will consist of a dance/movement auditions (see Dance Audition Requirements below.) Auditioners will read scenes in pairs and groups and will have their measurements taken by the costume shop.

The Rocky Horror Show by David O’Brien is the stage production that spawned the beloved and cult classic, Rocky Horror Picture Show. The stage production follows Brad and Janet as they enter the world of Dr FrankenFurter. Filled with fun sing a long numbers, and audience participation encouraged, The Rocky Horror Show will encourage us all to not "Dream it, but Be It".

This show explores human identity and sexuality in a very visceral and, at times, physical way. Please be aware that if cast in this production we will be working with an intimacy choreographer, but the cast will be expected to embrace the themes of the show through physical touch and revealing costumes.

What to Prepare

Please prepare two pieces for this audition, a short monologue and short song:

Monologue – A memorized monologue from a play that is under 90 seconds in length.
- If you are auditioning for both shows, you will be performing the same monologue for both directors. We are auditioning together.

Vocal Audition Requirements For The Rocky Horror Show

What To Prepare:

Please Prepare 30 – 60 Seconds (Under 1 Minute) Of Singing (In Addition To Your Memorized Monologue).

Your audition piece should demonstrate your singing ability and allow you to play a character; remember we want to see you act while singing.
Choose music that is similar to the style of the music in The Rocky Horror Show. Rock or folk or 70's music is appropriate.
Bring your sheet music for the audition pianist:
- The music should be in the correct key for your voice.
- You should have practiced with an accompanist to be sure that you are singing the music accurately in the correct key.
- You will not be able to sing unaccompanied (“a capella”).
Time yourself! Make sure your audition piece is within the time limit listed above so that you can be sure that you present the best part of the song before your time is up. Do not use a long piano introduction!!
First audition? You might want to consider hiring a vocal coach for one hour to help you prepare. Please contact SRJC’s Music Department for a recommendation of vocal coaches. 707-527-4249

HOW DO I FIND THE SHEET MUSIC FOR THE PIECE I WANT TO SING?

You will need to bring your song’s sheet music to the audition, making sure that it is in the right key for you. Here are four resources to consider when looking for
sheet music:

Try an online sheet music website. There are several, such as musicnotes.com.
Try the library. The Doyle library does contain some musical theatre and opera scores, as does the SSU library and some public libraries.
Try one of the great music stores in town.
