An introduction to influences and trends in theatre of the United States through the study of contemporary African American, Asian American, Latinx, Native American, and Arab American drama. The course will focus on script analysis, video presentations, and play productions to gain a deeper understanding of theatrical expression within each cultural heritage.

Satisfies Area E (Humanities) and Area G (American Cultures/Ethnic Studies) for the SRJC Associate Degree; Area C1 (Arts) for the CSU GE pattern; and Area 3A (Arts) for the IGETC. Requirement on the Theatre Arts AA, as well as the Stagecraft and Management Certificates. Elective on the Makeup Certificate.

Fundamental study of movement and masks for the student performer. Emphasis is placed on developing within the actor an understanding of their body as an instrument of expression and communication. The course encompasses exercises and improvisational explorations based on a variety of techniques for developing body and spatial awareness. These include an introduction to mime, the use of Neutral Mask and character masks, and ensemble development exercises.

Introduction to the materials and techniques of makeup design for stage, screen, and studio. Covers traditional and contemporary techniques of makeup application in both classroom and production environments.

The course consists of a mandatory 5 hours divided in this way: 2 hours lecture and 2 hours lab scheduled in person TTh 3-5PM. The additional 1 hour of in-person TBA lab will be met either before or after the scheduled class time, depending on the student’s availability.

The course requires successful completion of THAR 21A or FASH 70A or equivalent.

An introduction to the collaborative process of theatrical design through hypothetical and/or actualized team projects in which students focus on one or more design areas (scenery, costume, lighting, sound, props, makeup and hair). The course covers all aspects of the design process, including script analysis, research methodology, conceptualization, and communication skills, as well as careers in theatrical design.

Elective for the Theatre Arts AA for Transfer. Requirement for the Theatre Arts Costuming Certificate, Makeup Design Certificate, and Stagecraft Certificate. Elective for Stage Management Certificate.

Introduction to the principles of management in the theatre, with an emphasis on practical stage management techniques, responsibilities, methods, tools, ethics and essential skills. Course work includes lectures, hands-on activities, computer-based assignments, and front-of-house management for one or more SRJC Theatre Arts productions.

Requirement for Theatre Management Certificate. Elective for Acting Certificate.

This section has a mandatory 5-hour obligation. 2 hrs lecture and 2 hrs lab will be in person in Burbank room 135 Design Lab and room 175 Studio Theatre. The remaining TBA hour, while still mandatory, is not scheduled. This hour will be met by theatrical management assignments.

Ever wanted to know how theatre magic is created? Curious about how they build those great sets or achieve those cool lighting effects? Find out in this class filled with creative and practical skills used in the theatre. Methods, materials, and techniques of realizing the physical production on the stage, which include scenery, properties, lighting, and sound.

This class requires a corequisite of THAR 25 or THAR 25.2, working with 1-2 live productions this spring. The 17.5 TBA hours will be met by working on productions in the scene shop.
