World Theatre Through TimeONLINE *
MW 9:00AM-10:30AMJourney back in time on this “tour” of great plays and amazing developments that have transformed theatre around the world. An exciting exploration of world history from a theatrical perspective.

Introduction to Theatre ArtsTTH 10:30AM-12:00PM
Through a lively mixture of lecture, play attendance, and hands-on exercises, you’ll be introduced to the theatre as both an intriguing art form and important social forum. Learn about the many arts - including playwriting, design, directing, and acting - that make up this incredible art form.

Multicultural Perspectives In American TheatreTTH 10:30AM-12:00PM
ONLINE *
Offered once per yearAn introduction to influences and trends in theatre of the United States through the study of contemporary African American, Asian American, Latinx, Native American, and Arab American drama. The course will focus on script analysis, video presentations, and play productions to gain a deeper understanding of theatrical expression within each cultural heritage.
Satisfies Area E (Humanities) and Area G (American Cultures/Ethnic Studies) for the SRJC Associate Degree; Area C1 (Arts) for the CSU GE pattern; and Area 3A (Arts) for the IGETC. Requirement on the Theatre Arts AA, as well as the Stagecraft and Management Certificates. Elective on the Makeup Certificate.

Scene Study and CharacterizationTTH 2:40PM-5:10PM
Take your acting skills to the next level with this exciting course! Focusing on character development and scene work, it also prepares you for next year’s advanced classes and productions. (Prerequisite: THAR 10A or challenge exam/audition; contact instructor for more info!)
This section meets in person in Burbank room 129 Acting Lab. Students with 5pm class following THAR 10B may petition for schedule overlap; Email instructor for details.

Shakespeare Workshop 1MW 2:40PM-5:10PM (+ evening Showcase rehearsals TBA)
Offered once per yearIntroduction to performing Shakespeare through an exploration of historical context, text analysis, acting theory, and performance techniques. Includes both in-depth monologue and scene work, resulting in a showcase performance open to the public. (Prerequisite: THAR 10B)
Optional requirement for the Theatre Arts Acting Certificate
This section meets in person. This section requires concurrent enrollment in THAR 13.2AL

Introduction to performing Shakespeare through an exploration of historical context, text analysis, acting theory, and performance techniques. Includes both in-depth monologue and scene work, resulting in a showcase performance open to the public. (Prerequisite: THAR 10B)

This section meets in person. This section requires successful completion of THAR 13.2A and concurrent enrollment in THAR 13.2BL.
- THAR 19
Introduction to Movement & MaskM 6:30PM-9:30PM
Offered once per yearFundamental study of movement and masks for the student performer. Emphasis is placed on developing within the actor an understanding of their body as an instrument of expression and communication. The course encompasses exercises and improvisational explorations based on a variety of techniques for developing body and spatial awareness. These include an introduction to mime, the use of Neutral Mask and character masks, and ensemble development exercises.
Requirement for the Theatre Arts Acting Certificate.

Costuming and Makeup Courses
- THAR 21A
Intro to Costume TechnologyTTH 1:30PM-4:00PM
Whether you can sew or not, you’ll love this exciting introduction to the world of costuming (and, yep, you’ll learn how to sew, too).
This section requires a corequisite of THAR 25 or THAR 25.1, working with 1-2 live productions this spring.
This section will meet in person in Burbank room 112 Costume Studio.
- THAR 21B
Costume Technology 2TTH 1:30PM-4:00PM
This course continues application of methods, materials, and techniques used in costume construction with additional emphasis on related crafts and design as applied to the creative storytelling process of a public performance, at an intermediate level.
This section requires successful completion of THAR 21A.
This section meets in person in Burbank room 112 Costume Studio.
- THAR 22
Theatre Makeup DesignW 1:00PM-5:00PM
Introduction to the materials and techniques of makeup design for stage, screen, and studio. Covers traditional and contemporary techniques of makeup application in both classroom and production environments.
Both levels required for the Makeup Certificate. Elective on the Costuming Certificate.
Requires a corequisite of THAR 25.4 or THAR 25 working on 1-2 productions this spring.
This section meets in person in Burbank room 117 Makeup Lab.
- THAR 121.1
Costume DrapingTTH 3:00PM-5:00PM + 1 hour lab per week
The course consists of a mandatory 5 hours divided in this way: 2 hours lecture and 2 hours lab scheduled in person TTh 3-5PM. The additional 1 hour of in-person TBA lab will be met either before or after the scheduled class time, depending on the student’s availability.
The course requires successful completion of THAR 21A or FASH 70A or equivalent.

Theatrical Design Courses
- THAR 24
Introduction to the Design ProcessTTH 10:00AM-12:30PM
Offered once per yearAn introduction to the collaborative process of theatrical design through hypothetical and/or actualized team projects in which students focus on one or more design areas (scenery, costume, lighting, sound, props, makeup and hair). The course covers all aspects of the design process, including script analysis, research methodology, conceptualization, and communication skills, as well as careers in theatrical design.
Elective for the Theatre Arts AA for Transfer. Requirement for the Theatre Arts Costuming Certificate, Makeup Design Certificate, and Stagecraft Certificate. Elective for Stage Management Certificate.
This section meets in person in Burbank room 135.
Theatre Management Courses
- THAR 29
Introduction to Theatre ManagementMW 10:30AM-12:30PM (+1 flexible hour per week)
Offered once per yearIntroduction to the principles of management in the theatre, with an emphasis on practical stage management techniques, responsibilities, methods, tools, ethics and essential skills. Course work includes lectures, hands-on activities, computer-based assignments, and front-of-house management for one or more SRJC Theatre Arts productions.
Requirement for Theatre Management Certificate. Elective for Acting Certificate.
This section has a mandatory 5-hour obligation. 2 hrs lecture and 2 hrs lab will be in person in Burbank room 135 Design Lab and room 175 Studio Theatre. The remaining TBA hour, while still mandatory, is not scheduled. This hour will be met by theatrical management assignments.
Stagecraft Courses
- THAR 20
Introduction to StagecraftTTH 2:30PM-5:00PM (+1 hour per week)
Ever wanted to know how theatre magic is created? Curious about how they build those great sets or achieve those cool lighting effects? Find out in this class filled with creative and practical skills used in the theatre. Methods, materials, and techniques of realizing the physical production on the stage, which include scenery, properties, lighting, and sound.
This class requires a corequisite of THAR 25 or THAR 25.2, working with 1-2 live productions this spring. The 17.5 TBA hours will be met by working on productions in the scene shop.
This section will meet in person in Burbank 122 Scene Shop.
Props Design & Construction Courses

Properties WorkshopM 6:00PM-10:00PM
Offered once per yearIntroduction to the basic materials, techniques and creative process involved in the design and construction of stage properties (commonly called props), as well as historical and conceptual aspects of properties design. Class content will include development of properties for SRJC productions.
Requirement for Stagecraft Certificate. Elective for Costuming Certificate and Makeup Design Certificate.
This section will meet in person in Burbank room 122 Scene Shop.

Designed for experienced musicians, the focus of the course is on learning the musical score and incorporating it into the overall production.
