World Theatre Through TimeONLINE *
TTh 9:00AM-10:30AMJourney back in time on this “tour” of great plays and amazing developments that have transformed theatre around the world. An exciting exploration of world history from a theatrical perspective.
* Zoom meetings will take place for each class session at the days/time(s) listed above. Students are expected to be online with a functioning mic and camera for the duration of the live session. More details will be provided in the syllabus distributed by the instructor.

Through a lively mixture of lecture, play attendance, and hands-on exercises, you’ll be introduced to the theatre as both an intriguing art form and important social forum. Learn about the many arts - including playwriting, design, directing, and acting - that make up this incredible art form.

Scene Study and CharacterizationTTH 2:30PM-5:00PM
Take your acting skills to the next level with this exciting course! Focusing on character development and scene work, it also prepares you for next year’s advanced classes and productions. (Prerequisite: THAR 10A or challenge exam/audition; contact instructor for more info!)
This section meets in person in Burbank room 129 Acting Lab. Students with 5pm class following THAR 10B may petition for schedule overlap; Email instructor for details.

Styles Performance Workshop 1MW 2:40PM-5:10PM (+ evening Showcase rehearsals TBA)
Offered once per yearIntroduction to three different acting styles, including non-realistic styles and period realism, as well as further study of acting theory and specialized performance skills. Styles to be studied change each time the course is offered. This combination instruction/performance ensemble course requires night rehearsals during the last two weeks of classes and culminates in an evening public showcase performance. (Prerequisite: THAR 10B)
Optional requirement for the Theatre Arts Acting Certificate
This section meets in person. This section requires concurrent enrollment in THAR 13.2AL
- THAR 13.1B/BL
Styles Performance Workshop 2MW 2:40PM-5:10PM (+ evening Showcase rehearsals TBA)
Introduction to three different acting styles, including non-realistic styles and period realism, as well as further study of acting theory and specialized performance skills. Styles to be studied change each time the course is offered. This combination instruction/performance ensemble course requires night rehearsals during the last two weeks of classes and culminates in an evening public showcase performance. (Prerequisite: THAR 10B)
Optional requirement for the Theatre Arts Acting Certificate
This section meets in person. This section requires successful completion of THAR 13.2A and concurrent enrollment in THAR 13.2BL.

Musical Theatre TechniquesTTh 9:00AM-11:30AM
Students will be introduced to musical theatre performance through the study and practice of musical scenes from the Broadway stage. Emphasis is placed on the application of vocal techniques, dance movement, and characterization to create a convincing performance. Audition skills as they relate to musical theatre will be included.
Recommended Course Completion: THAR 10Aor MUSCP 14A or DANCE 10

Act in Film, Television & VoiceTTh 2:00PM-4:30PM
In this class, the student will be introduced to film, television, and voiceover acting using 21st century technology. Topics include: the differences between acting for the stage and acting for the camera, understanding the complexities of a professional film set as well as a television studio, and the study of voice-over techniques. The class will culminate in the creation of a web-ready acting demo reel. Students will need access to a secure digital memory card as well as a smart phone, tablet, or other handheld device for recording and editing.
Prerequisites/Corequisites: Course Completion of THAR 10A
Costuming and Makeup Courses

Intro to Costume TechnologyTTH 1:30PM-4:00PM
Whether you can sew or not, you’ll love this exciting introduction to the world of costuming (and, yep, you’ll learn how to sew, too).
This section requires a corequisite of THAR 25 or THAR 25.1, working with 1-2 live productions this spring.
This section will meet in person in Burbank room 112 Costume Studio.

Costume Technology 2TTH 1:30PM-4:00PM
This course continues application of methods, materials, and techniques used in costume construction with additional emphasis on related crafts and design as applied to the creative storytelling process of a public performance, at an intermediate level.
This section requires successful completion of THAR 21A.
This section meets in person in Burbank room 112 Costume Studio.

Theatre Makeup DesignW 1:00PM-5:00PM
Introduction to the materials and techniques of makeup design for stage, screen, and studio. Covers traditional and contemporary techniques of makeup application in both classroom and production environments.
Both levels required for the Makeup Certificate. Elective on the Costuming Certificate.
Requires a corequisite of THAR 25.4 or THAR 25 working on 1-2 productions this spring.
This section meets in person in Burbank room 117 Makeup Lab.

Special Effects Makeup & MasksM 12:00PM-4:20PM + 1 hour lab per week
Introduction to the materials and techniques of makeup design for stage, screen, and studio. Covers traditional and contemporary techniques of makeup application in both classroom and production environments.
The course requires successful completion or co-enrollment of THAR 25.A or THAR 25.

Special Effects Makeup & Masks 2M 12:00PM-4:20PM + 1 hour lab per week
Introduction Methods, materials and techniques realized in special effects designs as it relates to theatrical makeup, including prosthetics, wig styling, and mask design and construction for stage, screen and video. /

The fundamentals of costume design for the stage, focusing on character interpretation, script analysis, and materials.

Introduction to StagecraftTTH 2:30PM-5:00PM (+1 hour per week)
Ever wanted to know how theatre magic is created? Curious about how they build those great sets or achieve those cool lighting effects? Find out in this class filled with creative and practical skills used in the theatre. Methods, materials, and techniques of realizing the physical production on the stage, which include scenery, properties, lighting, and sound.
This class requires a corequisite of THAR 25 or THAR 25.2, working with 1-2 live productions this spring. The 17.5 TBA hours will be met by working on productions in the scene shop.
This section will meet in person in Burbank 122 Scene Shop.
Props Design & Construction Courses

Offered once per yearIntroduction to the basic materials, techniques and creative process involved in the design and construction of stage properties (commonly called props), as well as historical and conceptual aspects of properties design. Class content will include development of properties for SRJC productions.
Requirement for Stagecraft Certificate. Elective for Costuming Certificate and Makeup Design Certificate.

This course involves the rehearsal and performance of an instrumental part in a musical theatre or opera production for public presentation. Designed for experienced musicians, the focus of the course is on learning the musical score and incorporating it into the overall production.
