THAR 13.1A/B & THAR 13.1AL/BL
STYLES PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP
with Allie Pratt

MW 2:40PM-5:10PM (+ evening Showcase rehearsals TBA Nov. 28-Dec. 8; Showcase May 19)

Introduction to three different acting styles, including non-realistic styles and period realism, as well as further study of acting theory and specialized performance skills. Styles to be studied change each time the course is offered. This combination instruction/performance ensemble course requires night rehearsals during the last two weeks of classes and culminates in two performances of a public showcase. (Prerequisite: THAR 10B)

Optional requirement for the Theatre Arts Acting Certificate.

ACTING IN FILM, TELEVISION AND VOICE-OVER
with Elizabeth Dale

MW 12:00PM-2:30PM  

A class designed to introduce the actor to the challenges of film, television, and voice­over acting, with additional focus of 21st century tools. Topics include: how to adjust the theatrical acting process for camera and microphone producing a web-ready acting demo reel for casting and self-promotion. Students will need access to a secure digital memory card as well as a smart phone, tablet, or other handheld device for recording and editing video.

THAR 22.1 SPECIAL EFFECTS MAKEUP, WIGS, AND MASKS with Roxie Johnson

M 12:00PM-4:00PM  

Methods, materials, and techniques realized in special effects design as it relates to theatrical makeup, including prosthetics, wig styling, and mask design and construction for stage, screen, and studio applications. (Students with prior theatrical makeup or art experience may petition to waive the prerequisite by submitting a Prerequisite Challenge form with Admissions.)

THAR 22.2 SPECIAL EFFECTS MAKEUP, WIGS, AND MASKS 2 with Roxie Johnson

Intermediate methods, materials, and techniques realized in special effects design as it relates to theatrical makeup, including prosthetics, wig styling, and mask design and construction for stage, screen, and studio applications.

THAR 23 INTRODUCTION TO SCENIC DESIGN with Peter Crompton

TTH 10:30AM-1:00PM  

An introduction to the means, methods, and materials utilized in designing scenery for the stage.

Requirement Stagecraft Certificate

 

THAR 26 INTRODUCTION TO THEATRICAL LIGHTING with Theo Bridant

MW 10:30AM-12:30PM  (2 hours of weekly lecture and 2 hours weekly scheduled lab. Additionally, the remaining hours will met on the following days in Burbank Auditorium (8 hours each): Wednesday 2/15,  Thursday 2/16, Wednesday 4/5, Thursday 4/6, Friday 4/7, 2023.)

An introduction to the basic concepts of theatre lighting, including hands-on instruction in the operation of stage lighting, planning, and rigging. Instruction in light sources, the theory of electricity in the theatre, color media and theory, lighting design, light plots, equipment, control systems, and rehearsal/performance procedures and operation.

  • THAR 1
    World Theatre Through Time

    TTH 9:00AM-10:30AM 
    ONLINE *

    Journey back in time on this “tour” of great plays and amazing developments that have transformed theatre around the world. An exciting exploration of world history from a theatrical perspective.

    *Zoom meetings will take place for each class session at the days/time(s) listed above. Students are expected to be online with a functioning mic and camera for the duration of the live session. More details will be provided in the syllabus distributed by the instructor.

  • THAR 2
    Introduction to Theatre Arts

    MW 9:00AM-10:30AM

    Through a lively mixture of lecture, play- attendance, and hands-on exercises, you’ll be introduced to the theatre as both an intriguing art form and important social forum. Learn about the many arts-including playwriting, design, directing, and acting-that make up this incredible art form.

  • THAR 21A
    Intro to Costume Tech

    TTH 1:30PM-4:00PM

    Whether you can sew or not, you’ll love this exciting introduction to the world of costuming (and, yep, you’ll learn how to sew, too). This section requires a corequisite of THAR 25 or THAR 25.1, working with 1-2 live productions this spring.

  • THAR 21B
    Costume Technology 2

    TTH 1:30PM-4:00PM

    This course continues application of methods, materials, and techniques used in costume construction with additional emphasis on related crafts and design as applied to the creative storytelling process of a public performance, at an intermediate level. This section requires successful completion of THAR 21A.

  • THAR 22
    Makeup Design for Stage & Screen

    W 1:00PM-5:00PM

    Both levels required for the Makeup Certificate. Elective on the Costuming Certificate. Introduction to the materials and techniques of makeup design for stage, screen, and studio. Covers traditional and contemporary techniques of makeup application in both classroom and production environments.

    Requires a corequisite of THAR 25.4 or THAR 25 working on 1-2 productions this spring.

    Stage Costuming: Tailoring Techniques

    TTH 3:00PM-5:00PM (+1 hour weekly instruction)

    Practical application of methods, materials, and techniques used in tailoring historical men's and women's coats and jackets, with emphasis on tailored costume construction for a current Theatre Arts production. (Students with prior sewing experience may petition to waive the prerequisite by submitting a Prerequisite Challenge form with Admissions.)

    Introduction to Scenic Design

    Theatre Management Laboratory

    Course hours to be arranged. Evening and weekend hours are required. Registration by interview (Contact instructor.)*

    Practical experience in one or more areas of theatre management for public performances. Students apply and develop their managerial skills and knowledge within the context of a full Theatre Arts production. Methods, materials and techniques of realizing the physical production on the stage, which include scenery, properties, lighting, and sound.

    *This section is by interview only for a limited number of students to stage manage the two spring 2023 Theatre Arts productions. Evening and weekend hours are required and will be in person. More details will be provided in the syllabus distributed by the instructor.

    Introduction to
    Stagecraft

    TTH 2:30PM-5:00PM (+ 1 hour per week)

    Ever wanted to know how theatre magic is created? Curious about how they build those great sets or achieve those cool lighting effects? Find out in this class filled with creative and practical skills used in the theatre. Methods, materials and techniques of realizing the physical production on the stage, which include scenery, properties, lighting, and sound.

    This class requires a corequisite of THAR 25 or THAR 25.2, working with 1-2 live productions this spring. The 17.5 TBA hours will be met by working on productions in the scene shop.

    Production Lab: General

    Ever wanted to know how theatre magic is created? Curious about how they build those great sets or achieve those cool lighting effects? Find out in this class filled with creative and practical skills used in the theatre.

    This class is for students working on the 1-2 spring productions. Mandatory orientation meeting for new and returning students will be held January 24, 2023 from 5:30-6:30PM in Room 161. Attendance required. This section requires evening and weekend hours and each class meeting (rehearsals and performances) will be in person, live in Burbank Auditorium. More details will be provided in the syllabus distributed by the instructor.

      Production Lab: Costume Crew

      This class is for students working on the 1-2 spring productions. Mandatory orientation meeting for new and returning students will be held January 24, 2023 from 5:30-6:30PM in Room 161.
